With such a diverse culture and history that spans generations, it is no small wonder why the museums in New York City are some of the most iconic and prestigious across the globe! Yet there are a few that stand out from all the rest! We’ve highlighted the “quintessential quartet”, the reason why they have become so beloved, and a little known fun fact to impress even the biggest NYC aficionados!

American Museum of Natural History| Central Park West at 79th St.
The largest museum of its kind in the world, this NYC landmark houses exhibitions and collections that serve as a guide to the entire planet by presenting the world's cultures through the ages in a variety of different forms.
Fun Fact: President Ulysses S. Grant laid the cornerstone for the museum’s permanent home in 1874!

Metropolitan Museum of Art| Fifth Ave. at 82nd St.
The largest fine art museum in the world, the permanent collection of seventeen different departments includes more than two million works along with rotating exhibitions showcasing prominent pieces on loan.
Fun Fact: Home to the world’s oldest piano… dating back to 1720!

Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)| 11 W. 53rd St.
Exclusively devoted to modern art (with the oldest piece being completed in 1872), this varied collection of works is a comprehensive view into the modern masters (sorry, Michelangelo!).
Fun Fact: Original collection included only nine pieces!

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum| 1071 5th Avenue
Many may come for its striking architecture, but inside is one of the most innovative collections of contemporary art that is made all the more exciting when viewed in the unique spiral setting.
Fun Fact: Frank Lloyd Wright’s original design was not the white façade of today but red – “the color of creation”!
